Super Savings Saturday: How I Totally Blew It

Welcome to Super Savings Saturday...the how I totally blew it edition! You can go here to read all about how I overspent this week on groceries. To put it in a nutshell, I participated in a Freezer Cooking Session last weekend. Between that and coming out of the January Eat From The Pantry Challenge, I ended up spending almost triple our weekly grocery budget! Hey, it happens...

Here is what I bought this week at Publix (pictured above):

2 Chex Mix
2 Yoplait Yo-Plus Yogurt Packs
6 Sticks of Publix Butter
1 Trop50 Orange Juice
4 Blocks of Publix Cheese
2 containers Publix Sour Cream
2 Oikos Greek Yogurts
1 container Mushrooms
1 package Sargento Shredded Cheese
1 Tombstone Pizza
1 package Chocolate Chips
6 lbs of bananas
2 Hidden Valley Dressings
1 package Romaine Lettuce
1 can of Green Giant shoepeg corn
1 red bell pepper
1 cucumber
2 onions
2 bulbs of garlic
1 plum tomato
1 can kidney beans
1 dozen eggs
2 jars Pace Salsa
1 package dry ranch dressing
2 cans Rotel diced tomatoes
2 packages Ocean Spray craisins
2 bottles G2 drink
2 loaves Pepperidge Farm Wheat Bread
2 boxes Ronzoni pasta
1 package Cottonelle toilet paper (12 double rolls)
1 water (2.5 gallons)

Total Before Sales and Coupons: $113.68
Total saved from sales: $34.91
Manufacturer coupons used: $17.15
Store/Competitor coupons used: $7.00
Total amount saved: $59.06
Total paid after all sales and coupons: $54.62

So as you can see, it wasn't a great trip for me -- in terms of both how much I spent and my spending/savings ratio! Oh, and it gets so much better! That's just Publix...

I spent $7.02 at CVS (go here to see my trip), and $35.92 at Walmart (go here to see my trip) this week...in addition to the $54.62 spent above! Oh dear, I don't even want to total it up.

My friends...I've done the math on my calculator. I spent a total of $97.56 this week on groceries. Oh...my...word! I have not seen that high of a number for one week's worth of groceries in a very long time (okay, maybe not ever, to be honest).

February Totals:

1st Week: $97.56 (off to an extremely rough start!)

Total spent for month of February so far: $97.56
Total savings for month of February so far: $71.55

That means we only have $42.44 remaining for the month of February in our grocery budget. I think we can pull it off, though. We are really stocked up after buying all the essentials, plus we have some full and/or partial meals in the freezer now. With some savvy couponing and planning weekly meals from what we already have and what's on sale...I should be able to do it!

It looks like you saved 50% at Publix, still not too bad. Lately I have been averaging 67% savings. I've done better but I'm happy with that. I find I'm using less coupons since we are eating more whole foods but I am able to use my savings from paper/cleaning products to put towards our food budget. We spend $75 a week for a family of four. A few weeks ago I stocked up at triple coupons at Ingles and that week I went WAY over our budget. :)

Where are you getting your competitor store coupons? I rarely see them for the items you bought?

I think for this trip they were a $5 off of $15 CVS purchase, $1 off Tombstone Food Lion coupon, and $1 off $5 produce purchase Food Lion coupon.

Hope that helps!

And to everyone else - thanks for the encouragement! And thanks for sharing about your trips. =)
