Thrifty Thursday: Christmas Clearance Finds!

I decided to participate in Shelly's Thrifty Thursday this week, since I found some great "thrifty deals" on Christmas clearance items!

I dropped by Target on the way home from work yesterday, and I was very excited to find that they had just marked all of the Christmas items down to 75 % off. This is what I usually shoot for, because I can get a great price and there is still a variety of items to choose from.

Here is what I got (pictured above):

6 rolls of wrapping paper
17 medium/big gift bags
10 small gift bags
2 rolls of ribbon
1 Christmas letter stationary

Total paid: $16.21
Total saved: $46.54

Pretty awesome, if ya ask me. =) I'm all stocked up for next year! Yay!

Did you grab any great Christmas clearance deals???

Things I Learned In 2009...

Lynn, over at Midday Escapades, came up with a great idea to post "5 Things I Learned In 2009." I started making my list today, and I just couldn't keep it to 5, so mine is a tad bit longer. Here they are, though!

1. Depression is a battle, but the joy of the Lord is my strength.

2. The personal lifestyle choices I make directly affect poverty-stricken people all over the world.

3. Being a vegetarian is fun, encourages creativity, and introduces you to a diversity of foreign cuisine that is delicious and bursting with flavor. (For example, Indian and African food are now my favorite types of food. I would have never thought to try them, otherwise!)

4. When you feel as if you have no purpose in life, pursuing a small project can change everything. This is what blogging has done for me. It became a ministry full of purpose to help those people who literally need couponing to feed their families. Even though I'm not in my career field, I am still helping people. That is my passion, that is what I'm doing, and I'm thankful to God for providing this opportunity. It has been a blast.

5. I have the most wonderful, patient, and sweetest husband in the world. As I come home from work each day, delay dinners, don't keep the house as clean as I used to, and sacrifice time with him so that I can get my hours of blogging done...he never complains and fully supports me. I am very blessed.

6. I need to stop complaining about all the weight I've gained, and do something about it. I'm going to be thin in 2010. =)

7. The simplest life is the only way to live. Simplicity brings so much freedom in life. I no longer need anything. I am content with the basic luxuries of life that God has blessed me with. I no longer have any desire for things, clothes, the latest fashion, the newest gadget, or anything else this consumerism-driven society tries to tell me I need. I have been set free, and I am so much happier. When you throw out the many things that distract, the smaller and most important moments have more room to peek through and shine. The less I have, the more beautiful life truly becomes...

8. Keeping my mouth shut is usually the best choice. Silence is a good way to go, and I tend to later thank myself for not letting my emotions or opinions get the best of me.

9. It's okay to take a break from getting the best deals, sometimes. I need a break in order to prevent coupon burnout. It's very important.

10. God has plans, and He is way bigger than me. I need to stop putting Him in a box. Even if I still don't understand it, I must have faith...

What did you learn in 2009??? I'm now thinking about my goals for 2010! =)

Menu Plan Monday - Taking A Break!

Just wanted to let you know that we have guests coming in town tomorrow, and they will be staying with us for 2 weeks...

This will affect a couple of different things:

1. I am not going to do Menu Plan Monday this week or next. Since we have other people in the house, it's harder to plan meals ahead of time before they get here. Usually, when they come, we kind of plan the meals as we go. Also, my friend Blake is an amazing cook, so she usually does quite a bit of cooking as well. It's fun to tag-team! =)

2. I will be spending more on groceries. I will probably do a lot more impulse-buying than I normally do, depending on what meals we decide to cook. My Super Savings Saturday posts will either be a little different, or might not exist. I'm going to play it by ear. We'll see! The awesome thing is that through budgeting wisely and reducing our grocery budget to $35 a week, I have stashed away a little sum of money to spend on extra groceries during these 2 weeks! I even have right around $35 extra left over from the November and December grocery budgets (we were under both months!)

I always plan my meals, and I always spend less than $35 a week on groceries (sometimes a lot less). You know what I have to say? It's okay to go a little over for 2 weeks. Yes, I'm really saying that. Sometimes you have to loosen up just a bit, have some fun, and relax. I know it will be more difficult to stick to a budget the next 2 weeks, but that is okay.

Anyways, I'm super excited about our friends coming! We always have such a blast! And like I said in a previous post, I will probably be a little light on the blogging still. I'll be back to blogging 100% around January 13th.

Worth Reading: A Few Helpful Posts!

In the past day or so, I have come across a few really helpful blog posts. I thought I would pass them along!

Ever wondered what time of year you can get an item at rock-bottom price? The Thrifty Divas have put together a really helpful post that outlines the best time of the year (by month) to buy different items. Go check it out! One of the top items on January's list? Sheets and Towels!

Couponers United posted the tentative schedule for coupon inserts for 2010. Kind of nice to know what to be looking for each week. I try to post the "Coupon Insert Preview" every week, but in case I slip up, you can have this bookmarked. ;)

There is a really awesome moneymaker deal on Bayer Meters at Walgreens this month. It's a lot to take in, so I thought I would just send you on over to Common Sense With Money to read more about it. This is great if you want to build your stash of Register Rewards (to use at Walgreens, or possibly Publix)...or if you know somebody in need of diabetes supplies. Just recently I was thankful to be able to bless somebody with all of the glucose meters I had stashed away. You never know when you'll be able to donate these kinds of things, or help somebody out! That's why I buy it any time it's free, whether I need it or not!

Just Reminding You To Slow Down...

A Few Thoughts For You To Ponder:

"There is more to life than increasing its speed." ~Ghandi

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." ~Lao Tzu

It was really nice these past couple of days to take a break from everything. I was able to slow down, relax, and focus on what is most important. Do we have to have a Holiday to do this? I know it sure makes it easier...but it's something we must learn to do on our own throughout the year. If we don't, we'll get burnt out.

I know this is going to be one of my goals for 2010: SLOW DOWN. =) I encourage you to take some quiet moments for yourself today. Ponder, pray, reflect, relax, refresh, recharge, enjoy...
Just take it all in - Life is beautiful.

Super Savings Saturday (a day late)

Crystal did not do Super Savings Saturday again this week, because of Christmas. And I took a couple of days off from blogging. So, this is my Super Savings Saturday...it's just on Sunday night instead of Saturday morning!

It wasn't a great sale week, and I didn't plan any meals (because of the Christmas activities going on all week). I pretty much just grabbed the absolute best deals I saw...

Here is what I bought at Publix last week:

2 boxes Reese's Puffs cereal (my hubby's guilty pleasure)
2 packages Ocean Spray craisins
1 bag gold potatoes (5 lb bag)
10 tangerines
1 gallon milk
2 packages Kraft shredded cheese
2 boxes Orville Redenbacher popcorn
2 boxes Duncan Hines cake mix
2 boxes (4 sticks in each) I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
4 boxes Muellers Pasta
1 Breakstone sour cream (16 oz)
5 sweet potatoes
1 lb snow crab legs
2 packages Philadelphia cream cheese
4 cans Swanson vegetable broth
4 cans Del Monte diced tomatoes
4 cans Del Monte corn
1 water (2.5 gallons)

Total Before Sales and Coupons: $94.09
Total saved from sales: $44.07
Manufacturer coupons used: $14.55
Store/Competitor coupons used: $8.50
Total amount saved: $67.12
Total paid after all sales and coupons: $26.97

*I didn't make it to CVS this week. I took a break from couponing and bargain hunting. It was nice! So this Publix trip is the only money I spent on groceries this week.

December Totals:

1st week: $36.15
2nd week: $29.73
3rd week: $27.86
4th week: $26.97

Total spent for month of December so far: $120.71
Total savings for month of December so far: $413.61

We're under budget for the week and the month so far! =)

Are You Buying Your Wrapping Paper?

Just wanted to give you a really great money-saving tip: Buy all of your Christmas wrapping supplies now for Christmas 2010!

It was so nice this year to be able to pull out my 7 rolls of beautiful wrapping paper that I bought for only $1 each or less last year during the post-Christmas sales!

Usually, I buy my bows, decorations, gift tags, and ribbon the day after Christmas at 50% off. I didn't go this year (I just haven't been in the mood to venture out into the rush and stress of the crowd). As far as wrapping paper is concerned, I usually wait until it is at least 75 % off, or even 90 % off. To me, 75 % off is the best sale, because it is a great price and there is still a wonderful variety of really pretty wrapping paper to choose from.

In my opinion, Target is the best place to grab some wrapping paper, so I would go check it out! I'm probably going to stop by there this week.

Lynn, over at Workin' The Deals, has a Target Holiday Clearance Schedule posted on her blog. For Christmas items, here is the break down:

50 % off the day after Christmas
75 % off the 4th day after Christmas (29th)
90 % off the 7th day after Christmas (1st)

Hope you can grab some great deals on wrapping paper for next year! =)

A Couple Of Notes About Publix This Week...

I went shopping tonight, and I have just a few things to tell you about:
  • I played the Pace Salsa game, and I won!!! I have a coupon for a free jar of Pace salsa coming my way! I apologize, though. I thought this would be either an e-mailed or printable coupon. It is actually a coupon that comes to your mailing address about 4 weeks later. Because of this, you will not be able to use it on this week's sale. Go ahead and play, though! Pace salsa goes BOGO free all the time! Good luck! Hope you win...
  • I found peelies on the Emerald peanut jars tonight. They are $1/1 coupons! If you use 2 of these with the buy one get one free sale, you'll pay only $.65 each! I'll add the peelie to the weekly deals list! Just wanted to let you know, though.

The sale for this week goes through New Year's Eve, 12/31. The new sale will start on New Year's day! Happy Savings!!!

Back To Blogging!

I hope all of you had a fantastic Christmas. I definitely enjoyed mine! It was nice to have a couple days off to spend with my family - no work, no blogging. =) Thanks so much for understanding that I needed to take a little break.

I'm back to blogging, but these next couple of weeks are still going to be a little lighter than normal. We have guests coming in town for 2 weeks, so I won't be able to blog as much as usual. I will be back to my normal schedule around January 15th. I'm still going to keep you updated as much as I can, though!

Merry Christmas!

I am going to be taking a break from blogging over the next 2 days, so that I can spend some quality time with my family. Have a very merry and blessed Christmas! I pray that you are filled with the joy of Jesus during this beautiful season. Enjoy spending time with your families, as I know I will!

And remember...sometimes it's okay to take a break from the couponing and deal-seeking! I'll admit it - I was pretty tempted by the CVS deals this week, but I just never made it over there. I needed to take a break this week. =) And it felt really nice.

Merry Christmas!!!

My Frugal Christmas Finds of '09

So as frugal as I am with my coupons, store deals, and daily freebie finds...Many of you have been asking these kind of questions: What was your Christmas budget? How do you remain frugal throughout the Christmas season? How do you buy gifts for people on such a strict budget and low income? Should you abandon buying gifts when you're struggling to get by? etc. etc. etc.

Many of the answers to these questions will have to come next year with the "Simplifying Christmas" series that has been postponed. However, I thought it might be fun to share with you some of the best deals I have found this year for Christmas gifts!

Our budget was about $100 - $120 total. I'm having to make this post quite vague, because almost all of my family members read this blog, and I don't want them to know what I bought for them. =) But here are some of my favorite finds this year (pictured above)!
  • Boggle Game (deal at Target) - I snagged Boggle and a Scrabble card game for $7 total! The Boggle game itself is usually priced at about $15 to $20 (even on Amazon!)
  • Hallmark Cards - I got all my personal cards for our parents and grandparents at Hallmark for practically free, using three of these $5 off coupons (2 were printable, 1 was from a magazine I had). That's $15 worth of cards for completely free!
  • Hot Wheels - I picked up 3 hot wheels cars at Publix for free with coupons during one of my shopping trips. They were 99 cents, and I had $1/1 toy coupons!
  • The Christmas Box - I got 20 copies of this book for free (I only paid shipping). It was an offer the author was doing as a gift to his readers. I stashed these away to give to people over the next couple years as gifts. It is a nice addition to a gift, as well. I am reading it right now, to determine how great of a book it is, and who to give these as gifts to.
  • Ornaments and Treats - To help reduce our budget some, I decided to do some homemade gifts (part of simplifying Christmas!). I went up to Hobby Lobby. I got some small plastic gift bags to put baked goods/treats in. It will look nice with a ribbon tied around it to complete it! Also, I bought some ceramic ornaments and a 2-can spray paint system that makes a really pretty gold crackle finish. I was able to buy 10 ornaments, the gift bags, and the 2 cans of spray paint for only $10 total. The ornaments and gift bags were on sale for 50% off, and I had a 50% off coupon for the spray paint!
  • Taste of Home $5 Cookbooks - I grabbed 2 Taste of Home cookbooks when they went on sale for $5 a while back. This is an amazing gift, considering they are normally $25 each!
  • I bought the UP! DVD for only $10 when the blu-ray first came out at only $19.96, and I had the $10/1 coupon. Great gift for my little brother-in-law! (he doesn't read the blog, so I think we're safe).
  • I also pre-ordered a couple of DVDs for only $9.99 with free shipping. Most of these would have been $15 to $20 in store.
  • I ordered the Burt's Bees grab bag for only $20. It is normally a $50 gift! It was on sale, and I used a code to get an additional % off and free shipping. It was a really nice gift set, and the recipient is going to love it!!
  • I picked up a skein of yarn at Michael's with a 50% off coupon. It was only $2.50 after the coupon. I'm knitting a friend a pretty scarf. Talk about an inexpensive, simple, and very meaningful gift!
  • Bath & Body Works - I took advantage of one of the great Bath & Body Works sales, and used a $10/$30 coupon on top of it. I walked out with 6 bottles of spray and lotion for only $20! That knocked out a couple of gifts right there.
  • Swag Bucks - This is the biggest key to my savings this Christmas. I don't think I will ever have to pay for Christmas gifts again, really. I simply traded my Swag Bucks in for Amazon gift cards, and I was able to pretty much buy all my gifts on Amazon! My husband was quite skeptical at first. He was like, "Amazon doesn't have anything." But after discovering that they had the exact model number guitar pickup he wanted for the guitar he is building...he became quite excited. I was able to buy him his $100 guitar pickup (what he really really wanted) for only $65 on Amazon, PLUS it was completely free with swag bucks. This is something I never would have bought him otherwise, as you can see that the retail price is as much as our total Christmas budget! I recommend signing up for Swag Bucks now, so that next Christmas you can get some gifts for free! It's the best program ever!!!
So those are my best frugal finds this year for Christmas gifts. I hope you enjoyed hearing about them! I always love to hear about a great deal! It's so much fun! =)

What about you? Feel free to share the deals you were able to snag this season!

Simplifying Christmas: Postponed Until Next Year

Well guys...I hate to admit it, but Christmas just kind of snuck up on me! I was going to try to finish up the Simplifying Christmas series, but it's really not the type of thing that can be rushed. There is so much I want to say on the topic, and so many ideas I have for simplifying.

So with 2 days left until Christmas day, I'm going to just leave you with Part 1 and Part 2 (maybe you can gain some inspiration to simplify Christmas next year), and postpone the rest of the series until next Christmas! I apologize. Next year, I will be sure to start much earlier (at least a month ahead of time).

I wish you a simple, meaningful, and joy-filled Christmas! =)
